Matthew 6

Concerning …

Concerning Almsgiving

‘Beware of practising your piety before others in order to be seen by them; for then you have no reward from your Father in heaven.

Matthew 6:1; NRSVA
  • When you give:
    • Don’t make a noise about it (2)
    • (In fact) Don’t even let your other hand know what the other is doing (3)

so that your alms may be done in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

Matthew 6:4; NRSVA

Concerning Prayer

  • It’s the same with prayer … (5)
    • Do it in secret (6)
    • And don’t heap up phrases (7)

Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

Matthew 6:8; NRSVA

Pray then in this way:

Concerning Fasting

‘And whenever you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces so as to show others that they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward.

Matthew 6:16; NRSVA
  • We’re back to actions not being done in secret
    • So that others will not see …
    • … and the Father will reward
    • Is there an element of this in the Lord’s prayer too? – I need to go back and check

Concerning Treasures

‘Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal; but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Matthew 6:19-21; NRSVA

The Sound Eye

  • The eye is the lamp of the body.
    • So it matters then what we consume it
      • Am I wrong in getting the feeling that I should be more careful about what I watch on the TV, internet and beyond?

Serving Two Masters

‘No one can serve two masters; for a slave will either hate the one and love the other, or be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.

Matthew 6:24; NRSVA

Do Not Worry

‘Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?

Matthew 6:25; NRSVA
  • Look at the birds of the air (26)
  • [C]an any of you by worrying add a single hour to your span of life (27)
  • And why do you worry about clothing? (28)

Therefore do not worry, saying, “What will we eat?” or “What will we drink?” or “What will we wear?”

Matthew 6:31; NRSVA
  • Yet again there is talk of the Gentiles (others…) being the ones who do these things (32)
  • Instead the Jews are told to ‘strive first for the kingdom of God
    • Then his righteousness
    • and ‘all these things‘ will be given to you as well

‘So do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring worries of its own. Today’s trouble is enough for today.

Matthew 6:34; NRSVA

Matthew 7

The prep for tomorrow is Matthew 7 – which means we’re already about a quarter of the way through.
