Matthew 17

The Transfiguration

  • Get up and don’t be afraid?
    • … and yet now the gospel(/book) is taking a definitely ‘supernatural’ turn
      • Can we really claim that the author saw Jesus as ‘just’ a man?
  • Jesus [ordered’]: ‘Tell no one about the vision until after the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.’
  • Disciples: ‘Why, then, do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?’

‘Elijah is indeed coming and will restore all things; but I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but they did to him whatever they pleased. So also the Son of Man is about to suffer at their hands.’ Then the disciples understood that he was speaking to them about John the Baptist.

Jesus Cures a Boy with a Demon

Why does Jesus respond in such a strange way?

Jesus Again Foretells His Death and Resurrection

As they were gathering in Galilee, Jesus said to them, ‘The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into human hands, and they will kill him, and on the third day he will be raised.’ And they were greatly distressed.

From whom do kings of the earth take toll or tribute? From their children or from others?’

Matthew 17:25b; NRSVA
  • Then the people are free …
    • But so that you do not give offence …
      • Strange words? – Definitely time to start looking back
