Do Not Judge

  • … or you too will be judged (1)
    • … and by the same measure (2)
  • Becareful to see your own problems before looking at others (3-5)

You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your neighbour’s eye.

Matthew 7:5; NRSVA

Profaning the Holy

‘Do not give what is holy to dogs; and do not throw your pearls before swine, or they will trample them under foot and turn and maul you.

Matthew 7:6; NRSVA
  • And how exactly would we do this in ‘modern’ life?

Ask, Search, Knock

‘Ask, and it will be given to you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you. or everyone who asks receives, and everyone who searches finds, and for everyone who knocks, the door will be opened.

Matthew 7:7-8; NRSVA
  • Would you give your child something that would deliberately hurt them? (9-10)
  • How much more so then would your ‘heavenly Father’ give good gifts to you?

The Golden Rule

‘In everything do to others as you would have them do to you; for this is the law and the prophets.

Matthew 7:12; NRSVA

The Narrow Gate

  • The difference between the roads?
    • Destruction (17)
    • Life (18)

A Tree and Its Fruit

‘Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves.

Matthew 7:15; NRSVA
  • Test these people by looking at the consequences of what they do (16)
    • Every good tree bears good fruit
    • … and every bad one … bad
      • Bad trees should be cut down ‘and thrown into the fire’

Concerning Self-Deception

‘Not everyone who says to me, “Lord, Lord”, will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only one who does the will of my Father in heaven.

Matthew 7:21; NRSVA
  • Just because people appear to be “from” God – doesn’t (absolutely) mean that they are …

Hearers and Doers

‘Everyone then who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock.

Matthew 7:24; NRSVA

Now when Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were astounded at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority, and not as their scribes.

Matthew 7:28-29; NRSVA
